Toledo artists will gather for tribute to legendary poet

Local spoken-word artists, actors and community activists will hold a creative memorial to the iconic late musician Gil Scott-Heron at 7 p.m. July 7, 2011 at the Peacock Café, 2007 Monroe St. in Toledo.

         

The open-mic event will feature performers from the acclaimed New Works Writers Series theatrical troupe and is free to the public. University of Toledo professor Carter Wilson will co-host the special program, “Reflecting & Remembering: A Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron,” with Imelda Hunt, founder of New Works.

“As a performer, poet and recording artist, Gil Scott-Heron helped increase community consciousness in ways that very few other creative voices did,” says Hunt. “Our program will give Toledo’s arts community a chance to mourn his death and revisit the powerful messages in his body of work.”

Best-known for his signature 1970s spoken-word song “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Scott-Heron died in New York May 27. His songs and poetry addressed the black experience in America and the challenges of living in urban social settings.

A Grammy Award nominee, Scott-Heron is regarded by many as the “godfather” of hip hop.

Writers, musicians, educators and the general public are encouraged to share their thoughts and work, or simply enjoy the program, Hunt says. Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Announces June Art Walk Venues & Features

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo (ACGT) is pleased to announce that the Art Walk series will continue on Thursday, June 16. Art Walk is held each summer, on the third Thursday of each month, May through September. This is the Art Walk’s fourth season.

Remaining 2011 Art Walk dates are July 21, August 18, and September 15. Hours are 6 – 9 p.m.

The program is presented as part of the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo’s Live Work Create Toledo initiative, embracing economic development and revitalization through the arts. Under this umbrella, Art Walk is the sister program of Artomatic 419! and The Gallery Loop.

The Art Walk has grown exponentially in its previous three short years, growing from featuring less than 10 venues in its first year and a slim attendance, to finishing the 2010 season with a peak attendance of more than 700, and featuring an average of 20 venues each month.

The Art Walk offers Toledoans an opportunity to come out and explore their Downtown, visiting great locally-owned galleries, businesses, artist studios and other venues while perusing and purchasing unique, locally-crafted one-of-a-kind art work and gifts – all while enjoying the fresh summer air and getting a little exercise, be it walking, biking, or otherwise.

This year, ACGT will continue the 2010 implementation of sponsoring local performers with “busking” (a.k.a. street performing) licenses from the City of Toledo, allowing them to perform legally on city sidewalks during the event while collecting tips.

June’s sponsored street performers will be musicians Meaghan Roberts and Lucian Townes (both solo acoustic guitar players), musician Ian Welch, performance artist Katie Komuniecki, performance artist Bianca Marcia, and experimental rock/jazz duo What’s Next.  

Also up-coming this season will be the installation of nearly 20 more “Art Benches” installed in the Arts Zone/Warehouse District. Ten of these colorful benches were installed during the 2010 season to help spruce up the streets of the neighborhood and increase its identity and visibility as an arts district. The benches were painted by youth apprentices in the award-winning Young Artists at Work program, which employs diverse and at-risk teens for six weeks in the summer, exposing them to an intensive multi-media arts training and long-lasting job training skills.

Continuing this year will be the use of ACGT’s teal Live Work Create Toledo flags, which Art Walk-goers can use to identify participating venues during the event, and creative-based businesses throughout the season.

New this year is the addition of a local pedicab (bicycle taxis) service offering event goers rides from the St. Clair Village to Uptown, and vice versa.

ARTOLEDO 2011 gives 20 North Gallery the opportunity to promote the professional development of promising new talent in the Toledo art landscape.  All three of the artists selected for the show have been establishing their artistic identities in the community, but have not yet been featured in a major commercial gallery setting.

Sur Saint Clair Gallery will be featuring Jelise A. Roberts.  She comes from a family full of musicians.  At an early age she realized she had another passion besides music and that is ART!  Jelise decided to pursue her passion and received a scholarship and earned her degree at Columbus College of Art and Design.  She has started a movement called “My Music is Major”.  This movement was put together to help raise awareness about the importance of music and music education.  Today the arts are in danger of being stripped from our schools which would leave our children without a way to express themselves creatively.  Jelise is preparing to showcase her love of art and music.

Mindy Czech is a musician from Toledo, Ohio who has been creating jewelry on a loom.  Her unique bracelets come in many different designs, colors and sizes.

John Walz Photography: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the Collingwood Arts Center’s latest exhibition is sure to have local shutterbugs lined up around the block. The solo exhibition by renowned photographer John Walz is currently on display now through the end of May. There will be a free public recption on Friday, May 13, from 7-10pm.

CAC Resident Artists Exhibition: If you’ve ever been to a local arts event in the city of Toledo, then chances are you’ve seen work by a Collingwood Arts Center resident, either past, present, or future. The Center’s latest exhibition is a celebration of some of best work its current residents have to offer.

The CAC Resident Artists Exhibition is set to open on May 6, at 7pm and will be showcased throughout the building’s many gallery spaces. The reception is free and open to the public and will feature both visual artwork and live performances until 10pm. Light refreshments will be available. The show will remain on display throughout the month.

"CityScapes" juried competition seeking online submissions

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announces a Juried Competition with the theme “CityScapes” in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for inclusion into the Gallery’s May 2011 online group exhibition.

Light Space & Time encourages entries from all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field.

A group exhibition of the top five finalists will be held online at the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery during the month of May 2011. Awards will be for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In addition, 2 artists will be recognized with Honorable Mention awards. Depending on the amount and the quality of the entries there may also be Special Recognition awards posted as well. The theme for the April art competition is “CityScapes”. The submission process and the deadline end on April 28, 2011.

Winners of the CityScapes Exhibition will receive extensive publicity in the form of email marketing, 70+ press release announcements, social media marketing and website traffic in order to make the art world aware of the artist’s accomplishments.  There will also be links back to the artist’s website as part of this achievement.

All winners will be selected, announced and featured on the Light Space & Time website on May 1, 2011 and remain online in the gallery through May 31, 2011. Thereafter, the artworks will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives with links to the artist’s websites.

ACGT Announces Artomatic 419! 2011 to take place April 2, 9 & 16

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo is pleased to announce that its popular program, Artomatic 419!, returns in 2011, taking place over three full Saturdays, April 2, 9 & 16, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day.

Celebrating it’s fourth incarnation, the biennial event – held every other year – is looking at one of its biggest and best years yet! As Northwest Ohio’s largest nonjuried, multi-media arts showcase, Artomatic 419! 2011 will see nearly 300 visual, performing, and literary artists from across our region’s Creative Community take over two buildings in Downtown Toledo’s St. Clair Village, situated right in the heart of the burgeoning Warehouse District neighborhood across from Fifth-Third Field.

Due to an overwhelming response from ACGT’s call for artists in the autumn of 2010, Artomatic 419! Out grew its first building, adding for the first time in the event’s history a second site. The 2011 event will take place simultaneously in the 3-story historic building at 407 Washington St. (behind Jed’s), and kitty-corner at 25 S. St. Clair Street (across from Homeslice Pizza). Both of these wonderful structures have been empty for some time, despite being situated in the city’s core. Filled with art, live performance, and Artomatic 419! event-goers, these building will enjoy new life and new recognition for the first time in years.

This year’s event will also feature the new addition of an “official after-party.” The after-party event is sponsored by The Ottawa Tavern and Toledo.com, and will feature regional live entertainment each night from 10 p.m. to midnight at The Event Center (23 N. Summit St.).

Art Night at the Attic

On Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm, there will be the 'Art Night at the Attic' event at Mano's Greek restaurant. The featured spoken word artist is John Dorsey, who is an extremely talented local poet.

There will also be an exhibition and forum for discussion with local artists. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Collingwood Arts Center.

Mano's Greek restaurant is located at 17th and Adams Street in downtown Toledo. The Attic is located on the upper level of the restaurant.

Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Announces Fontana, Stroud, Yarnell Exhibition

The Fontana, Stroud, Yarnell Exhibition will be on display March 7 thru April 22, 2011 in the Parkwood Gallery. The public is invited to join us for a reception for the exhibition on Friday, March 11 from 6 to 8 pm.

The artists in this exhibition are united in their use of familiar materials calling into question our daily routines, realities and common assumptions.

Anthony Fontana, Learning Technologies Consultant and an Instructor of Art at Bowling Green State University, uses a conceptual approach to create a dialogue between traditional art and the internet. Using familiar art materials, like pencils, a sketchbook, a linoleum block and paper, he upturns our preconceived notions of what art is by interjecting supposed high art with contemporary internet experiences and ironic humor.

Another artist, Evaleigh Stroud, carefully considers the power of her materials in her current series of work.  Her mixed media sculpture explores gender roles through pairing the craft of knitting with the iconic and in some cases commonplace subject matter of guns. The soft, glitter embedded yarn of her knitted firearms ask the viewer to question this powerful historical and contemporary symbol. Stroud is currently working towards her BFA in Studio Fine Arts at the University of Toledo.

Last, but certainly not least, the work of Meghan Yarnell rounds out the conversation with social as well as personal commentary regarding the long-standing values of wealth, beauty and happiness. Yarnell enjoys imparting imagery on everyday, functional ceramic vessels to encourage the viewer to reflect upon our social norms while eating breakfast or drinking the morning coffee. Yarnell received her BFA in 3-D Studies at Bowling Green State University in 2005.

Opportunity to make art for WAVE Festival

On Monday, March 7, 2011, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, there is an opportunity at Lourdes College to make beautiful art work on the tiny canvas of a domino. All dominoes and pieces of art that are made during this session will be sold at the W.A.V.E. Festival.

This workshop will take place at the Mother Adelaide Hall, Room 205. If you need directions, you can find them on the website for Lourdes College.

The W.A.V.E. Festival is a celebration of both the diversity of women entrepreneurs and artists and the observance of National Women's History Month. It will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm,at Lourdes College. There will be music, food, and enetertainment.

Creating cool art work on dominoes is not something you get to do everyday, so if you can make it to the event you are sure to have a memorable experience.

Mickey Finn's Pub hosts open call for video shoots of local artists

Are you looking for a bigger audience to enjoy your music, poetry, or visual art? If so, Mickey Finn's Pub will begin shooting local talent for their compilation dvd series and local television show on Thursday, March, 3, 2011.

There will be filming of local talent every Thursday, starting at 8:00 pm, until it seems as though every available artist in the Northwest Ohio area has been covered. All styles and mediums of artists and bands are encouraged to participate in this event.

Each participant will receive a copy of a dvd highlighting the footage of their performance and/or exhibition. Also, participants will be given an uploadable track that they can post on their web page.

Talent is being booked on a first come/first served basis. PRIZM Creative Community presents a Watercolor Workshop with artist instructor Dr. Arthur Mancini

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRIZM Creative Community invites both members and non-members to a Watercolor Workshop with artist instructor Dr. Arthur Mancini at the Schaller Memorial Building, 130 West Indiana Ave., Perrysburg starting Thursday March 9, 2011 and meeting weekly through March 31. Separate 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm afternoon and 6:00 to 9:00 pm evening sessions are planned. However, if the afternoon session does not have a minimum enrollment of eight students by the March 6th deadline, only evening instruction will be available.

Cost for either four week session is $55 for PRIZM members and $70.00 for guests. Individuals can state their preference for attendance time, leave their contact information for class preparation, and receive a supply list by contacting Workshop Chairman Kitty Pattay @ 419-874-5210. No prior experience is needed, and participants will learn the basics and principles of watercolor application techniques without struggling with detailed drawing. Teacher supplied patterns given prior to class will become a tool in practicing and perfecting application techniques learned in each session. Each class begins with a demonstration after which Dr. Mancini is available to give individualized help and instruction. Students will spend a two week session on landscape, and 2 weeks on a floral study. Participants taking four sessions will complete two projects.

Art Mancini is a semi-retired urological surgeon of 44 years, whose office had been at the Toledo Clinic. He was involved in teaching resident physicians for about 37 years and currently has been teaching watercolor classes and tutoring 2nd and 3rd graders in the inner city.

Dr. Mancini’s avocation of watercolor painting started with taking classes at the Museum and Lourdes College with Walter Chapman. He has been painting in watercolors for about 30 years and had shown in the Museum's community area for several years along with many other physicians of the Academy of Medicine. He is known as the "flower doctor" because he has specialized in painting flowers as well as cottages. He has also done a series of Saugatuck and Douglas, Michigan cottages and historical buildings.
